The rain poured heavily that night, washing the dusty streets of Lagos with its cold, merciless hands. Adaeze sat in her small apartment, staring blankly at the envelope in her trembling hands. Her heart pounded as she traced the golden seal on the paper.
It was a marriage certificate.
Her marriage certificate.
Signed, sealed… but a secret.
A single tear slipped down her cheek as she whispered his name.
“Chijioke.”
He was her everything. Her first love, her protector, the only man who had ever made her feel alive. But now, she held in her hands the proof of their forbidden love—one that could never see the light of day.
How had she ended up here?
Her mind drifted back to that fateful night a year ago… the night she became a wife in secret.
“Do you trust me?” Chijioke’s deep voice sent shivers down Adaeze’s spine as he held her hands tightly under the dim light of a hotel room.
“With my life,” she had whispered, staring into his eyes, full of love and fear.
“Then marry me,” he had said. “Right here, right now.”
Her breath hitched. It was crazy. Insane. But when she looked into his eyes, she saw desperation—a silent plea.
“But your family—your father—” she had hesitated, her heart pounding.
“They can never know,” he had cut in, his grip tightening. “Ada, you are the love of my life, but my father… he has plans for me. He has already chosen someone else for me. If he finds out about us, he will destroy you. I can’t let that happen. I won’t lose you.”
And so, blinded by love, she had said yes.
They had signed the papers, exchanged vows with only the hotel manager as their witness, and sealed their love with a desperate kiss.
She had become Adaeze Chijioke Eze.
A wife in hiding.
But now, a year later, reality was slapping her in the face. Because tonight, as the rain washed over Lagos…
Chijioke was getting engaged.
To another woman.
